Scientifically Accurate Dimetrodon

Based off of the latest scientific data about this early Permian predator, Dimetrodon was most likely not the scaly lizard like creature we know from past depiction. Dimetrodon was part of the therapsid family which shared many combined characteristics of both mammals and reptiles before there was an evolutionary split.

The modern day depiction of Dimetrodon shows it having a more leathery appearance with small hairs across the body. The creature also likely didn't possess a skin covered "sail" but instead had a fatty hump with the ends of its elongates spines stretching out past the body. It also most likely possessed a slightly armored underbelly with "proto scales" similar to the plating of an armadillo.

The Dimetrodon would have dominated it's natural habitat of lush woodlands and marshes as an apex predator. It would have occupied a niche similar to that of modern day large cats like the panther or leopard.
